A : Unlike other religions, the faith in Buddhism has nothing to do with the belief in the existence of Buddha. It is related to belief in the human beings’ capacity to develop their potentiality, grow their spirituality, and in the end, achieve enlightenment, their true nature or Buddha-nature. That is, all human beings have Buddha-nature, original pure wisdom, and are absolutely equal, and this is faith in Buddhism.
다른 종교와는 달리 불교에서의 믿음은 부처님의 존재에 대한 믿음과는 전혀 상관이 없습니다. 불교의 믿음은 모든 인간존재들이 자신의 잠재력을 개발하고 정신성을 성장시키고 종국에는 자신의 진정한 본질, 또는 불성을 깨달을 수 있는 능력에 대한 믿음과 관계되어 있습니다. 즉, 불교에서의 믿음은 모든 인간존재들은 원래부터 불성과 순수한 지혜를 가지고 있으며 절대적으로 평등하다는 사실에 대한 믿음입니다.

A : A faith in Buddhism is the first of the four stages in Buddhist practice and enlightenment, which are faith, understanding, practice, and realization. According to the Awakening of faith in the Mahayana, there are four kinds of faith : faith in the Ultimate True Suchness (or True Reality), faith in the countless merits of Buddha, faith in the Dharma, and faith in the practitioners. 불교에서의 믿음은 불교수행과 깨달음을 위한 4단계__[신해행증(信解行證); 믿음(信), 이해(解), 실천(行), 깨달음의 증명(證)]__에서 첫 번째 단계입니다. 대승기신론에 의하면 믿음에는 4가지가 있는데, 궁극적 실제(진여)에 대한 믿음, 부처님의 무량한 공덕에 대한 믿음, 부처님의 가르침에 대한 믿음, 그리고 수행자들에 대한 믿음입니다.

A : If you believe in the True Suchness with joy, it makes the aroma of the True Suchness permeate within you, and this is what you have to understand.
기쁨으로 진여를 믿으면 진여의 향기가 당신 안에 스며든다는 것을 이해해야 합니다.
Q : After we understand it, what do we have to practice?
기쁨으로 진여를 믿으면 진여의 향기가 우리 안에 스며든다는 것을 이해한 다음에는 무엇을 실천해야 합니까?
A : You have to practice meditation on the True Suchness based on their belief and understanding of it.
진여에 대한 믿음과 이해를 바탕으로 진여에 대한 명상을 실천해야 합니다.
Q : After that, what are we supposed to realize through the three stages of faith, understanding, and practice of meditation?
진여에 대한 믿음과 이해, 그리고 명상수련을 한 다음에 그 세 가지 단계를 통해서 무엇을 깨달아야 합니까?
A : You have to realize not only the absolute equality and oneness of all beings based on the True Suchness, but also the interdependent origination and extinction of all beings depending on ‘the law of the cause and condition’.
진여를 근본으로 해서 모든 존재들은 절대평등하고 ‘하나’라는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다. 뿐만 아니라 모든 존재들은 원인과 조건의 법칙(인연법)을 따라서 서로 의존적으로 발생하고 소멸한다는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다.
Q : Could you explain what do we have to understand, practice, and realize through faith in the immeasurable merits of Buddha?
부처님의 무량한 공덕에 대한 믿음을 통해서 무엇을 이해하고 실천수행하고 깨달아야 하는지 설명해 주시겠습니까?
A : First, based on faith, you should understand that believing in Buddha is to plant wholesome root and to grow wisdom within you. Second, you should practice to pay respect to Buddha based on understanding. Last, you should realize all beings have Buddha-nature.
첫째, 부처님에 대한 믿음은 선(善)의 뿌리를 심고 당신 안에 지혜를 자라게 한다는 사실을 이해해야 합니다. 둘째, 그러한 이해를 바탕으로 부처님을 공경하는 실천수행을 해야 합니다. 마지막으로 일체 존재들은 불성을 가지고 있다는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다.
Q : What do we have to understand, practice, and realize through faith in Dharma?
부처님의 가르침에 대한 믿음을 통해서 우리는 무엇을 이해하고 실천수행하고 깨달아야 합니까?
A : First, you have to understand if you believe in and follow Buddha’s teaching, you will get uncountable benefit for your life. You then have to practice generosity, precept, forbearance, diligence, and tranquility and analytical meditation. You have to realize not only Buddha, but also everything in your daily life are the necessary ‘cause and condition’ for your growth and enlightenment.
첫째, 부처님을 믿고 따르면 당신의 삶에 무한한 이익이 있다는 것을 이해해야 합니다. 그런 다음 보시, 지계, 인욕, 정진, 그리고 고요함과 분별적 명상을 실천 수행해야 합니다. 그리고 나서 부처님뿐만이 아니라 당신의 일상적인 삶에서 만나지는 일체 것들이 모두 당신의 성장과 깨달음을 위해서 반드시 필요한 인연이라는 사실을 깨달아야 합니다.
Q : What do we have to understand, practice, and realize through faith in practitioners?
수행자들에 대한 믿음을 통해서 우리는 무엇을 이해하고 실천수행하고 깨달아야 합니까?
A : You have to understand that all practitioners are practicing in the right way for benefit of self and others in their own way depending on the ‘cause and condition’. You then have to be close to practitioners with joy and try to learn the right practice from them.
모든 수행자들은 인연법을 따라서 자신의 방식대로 자신과 타인의 이익을 위해서 수행하고 있다는 사실을 이해하고 깨달아야 합니다. 그러기 위해서는 즐거운 마음으로 수행자들과 가까이 지내고 그들로부터 올바른 수행을 배우려고 노력해야 합니다.
Q : Could you explain the difference between ‘self effort-faith’ and ‘outside-help-faith’?
자력신앙과 타력신앙의 차이점에 대해서 설명해 주시겠습니까?
A : It is like the relationship between wisdom and compassion. They are also like the two wings of a bird, both are necessary for flying or the two wheels of a carriage, both are necessary for moving. Taking the ‘cause and condition’ as an example, the ‘self effort-faith’ corresponds to the ‘inner cause’; on the other hand, ‘outside-help-faith’ corresponds to the ‘outer condition’. Like the ‘cause’ and ‘condition’ are always interconnected and are oneness, ‘self effort-faith’ and ‘outside-help-faith’ are not separate and independent.
그건 지혜와 자비의 관계와도 같습니다. 또한 자력신앙과 타력신앙은 새가 날기 위해서 필요한 새의 양날개와 같고 또 수레가 움직이기 위해서 꼭 필요한 수레의 두 바퀴와 같습니다. 인연(因緣)을 예로 들어서 설명하면 자력신앙은 ‘내적 원인’에 해당하고 타력신앙은 ‘외적 조건’해당됩니다. 조건이 항상 상호 연결되어 있고 하나이듯이 자력과 타력신앙도 서로 분리되거나 독립적인 별도의 것이 아닙니다.
Q : Then do you mean ‘self effort-faith’ and ‘outside-help-faith’ works spontaneously for our enlightenment.
그렇다면 자력신앙과 타력신앙이 깨달음을 위해서 함께 동시에 작용한다는 말씀이신가요?
A : Yes. Everything in the whole universe works in countless ways for sentient beings’ enlightenment. It is because they are all products from the ‘co-arising’ or ‘interdependent arising’.
그렇습니다. 삼라만상의 모든 것들이 다 중생의 깨달음을 위해서 무수히 다양한 방식으로 작용합니다. 왜냐하면 우주만물은 모두 상호 의존해서 발생된 연기의 산물이기 때문입니다.
