Q : Does the previous life exist or not?
전생은 존재하는 것인가요, 아니면 존재하지 않는 것인가요?
A : I think it depends on how you think. From the viewpoint of conventional truth(worldly truth), the previous life exists. However, from the viewpoint of ultimate truth, there is no such a life.
제 생각으로는 당신이 어떻게 생각하느냐에 따라서 달라질 것 같습니다. 세속적 진리의 관점에서 본다면 전생은 존재합니다. 그러나 궁극적 진리의 관점에서 본다면 전생은 존재하지 않습니다.
Q : Could you explain why there are two such different viewpoints?
왜 그와 같이 서로 다른 두 가지 관점이 있는지 설명해 주시겠습니까?
A : If you are enlightened, you do not belong to the world of ‘the Six Realms’. Therefore, from the enlightened being’s perspective, there is no previous life ; once you are enlightened, then you are free from ‘the Wheel of Life’. On the other hand, if you are not enlightened, you belong to the world of ‘the Six Realms’. Therefore, from the unenlightened person’s perspective, there is the previous life ; the person is endlessly propelled by one’s own karma from one state of rebirth to another.
만일 당신이 깨달은 사람이라면 당신은 육도의 세계에 속하지 않을 것입니다. 그러므로 깨달은 사람의 관점에서 본다면 전생은 없습니다. 왜냐하면 일단 깨닫고 나면 윤회의 고리로부터 자유롭기 때문입니다. 한편, 만일 깨닫지 못했다면 당신은 육도의 세계에 속해 있을 것입니다. 그러므로 깨닫지 못한 사람의 관점에서 보면 전생은 있는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그런 사람은 자기 자신의 업에 의해서 한 상태의 삶에서 다른 상태의 삶으로 끊임없이 반복되어지기 때문입니다.
Q : Then, if a person admits the existence of previous life, does it mean that person is not enlightened?
그렇다면 만일 누군가가 전생의 존재를 인정한다면 그 사람은 깨닫지 못했다는 증거입니까?
A : I don’t think so. It is not always true that a person rejecting the existence of previous life is enlightened. Therefore, we need to see two such different aspects at the same time.
그렇지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 만일 누군가가 전생의 존재를 부정한다고 해서 그 사람이 반드시 깨달았다고 할 수는 없기 때문입니다. 그러므로 우리는 그 두 가지 서로 다른 측면을 동시에 이해할 필요가 있습니다.
Q : I am wondering about your own perspective.
당신 자신은 어떤 관점을 가지고 있는지 궁금합니다.
A : I am trying to comprehend two such different aspects simultaneously. However, I basically believe in the previous life.
나는 그 두 가지 서로 다른 측면을 동시에 파악하려고 합니다. 그러나 기본적으로는 전생을 믿습니다.
Q : Why do some believe in the previous life and some do not believe in it?
왜 어떤 사람은 전생을 믿고 어떤 사람은 전생을 믿지 않는 건가요?
A : It is because they do not know about it. In other words, people who do not know the real truth believe in only what they want to believe. Therefore, an ignorant person believes in whatever he/she wants based on his/her own desire. On the other hand, a wise person believes in whatever he/she experiences based on compassion and reason.
왜냐하면 그들은 전생에 대해서 모르기 때문입니다. 다시 말씀 드려서 진짜 진리를 알지 못하는 사람은 자기가 믿고 싶은 것만을 믿기 때문입니다. 그래서 무지한 사람은 자기 욕망에 근거해서 무엇이건 원하는 것을 믿습니다. 반면에 지혜로운 사람은 자비와 이성에 근거해서 자기가 경험한 것을 믿습니다.
Q : Then, is it better for us to believe in the previous life or not?
그러면 우리는 전생을 믿는 것이 좋을까요, 믿지 않는 것이 좋을까요?
A : We should believe in the previous life, because according to the conventional truth, it truly exists.
우리는 전생을 믿어야 합니다. 세속적 진리에 의하면 전생은 진실로 존재하기 때문입니다.
Q : How about the ultimate truth? Doesn’t the previous life truly exist according to the ultimate truth?
궁극적 진리의 경우는 어떻습니까? 궁극적 진리에 의하면 전생은 진실로 존재하지 않지 않나요?
A : Yes. However, the previous life does not exist because past, present, and future is relative, the same moment and oneness in the world of the ultimate truth. Therefore, the reason previous life does not exist is not due to the previous life not existing unconditionally. It is due to no separation or distinction between the previous life and present life in the world of the ultimate truth.
맞습니다. 그러나 전생이 존재하지 않는 이유는 과거, 현재, 미래가 궁극적 진리의 세계에서는 상대적이고 동일한 순간이며 하나이기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 전생이 존재하지 않는 이유는 전생이 무조건 존재하지 않기 때문이 아닙니다. 그것은 궁극적 진리의 세계에서는 전생과 현생 사이에 분리나 구별이 존재하지 않기 때문입니다.
Q : Could you explain why there is no separation and distinction between the previous life and present life and between these two lives and the future life in the world of the ultimate truth?
왜 절대적 진리의 세계에서는 전생과 현생, 그리고 이 둘과 내생 사이에 구별이나 차별이 없는지 설명해 주실 수 있는지요?
A : I think it is related to the certain concepts, such as time, space, and consciousness. For example, there are 3 hour difference between Seoul and Auckland. If it is 10 PM in Seoul, it is 1 AM the next day in Auckland. Therefore, relatively, the person in Seoul lives in the past and the person in Auckland lives in the future ; at the same moment, they live in different times due to different space.
거기에는 시간, 공간, 의식과 같은 특정한 개념들이 관련되어 있는 것 같습니다. 예를 들면 서울과 오클랜드 사이에는 3시간의 시차가 존재합니다. 그래서 서울이 밤 10 시면 오클랜드는 다음 날 새벽 1시가 됩니다. 그러므로 상대적으로 서울에 있는 사람은 과거를 살고 오클랜드에 있는 사람은 미래를 살고 있습니다. 즉, 그들은 서로 다른 공간에 있기 때문에 똑같은 순간에 서로 다른 시간을 살고 있는 것입니다.
Q : How is it related to the previous life and present life?
그것이 어떻게 전생, 현생과 관련되어 있습니까?
A : If you are conscious about these two different times and space at the same moment, you will understand the time concepts of past and present. In addition to it, if you think of infinite time and space in the universe transcending the world you are living, at least you will presume that this life is not the end of existence.
만일 당신이 똑같은 순간에 두 다른 시간과 공간에 대해서 의식할 수 있다면 과거와 현재의 시간개념을 이해할 것입니다. 거기에 더해서 당신이 살고 있는 세계를 초월해서 우주의 무한한 시간과 무한한 공간에 대해서 생각해본다면 적어도 당신은 이 삶이 존재의 끝은 아니라는 사실을 짐작할 수 있을 것입니다.
Q : Is there any way to know about the previous life?
전생을 아는 방법이 있을까요?
A : I think the only way to know about the previous life is to truly know the present life, for, in the conventional truth, the present life is to be transformed from the previous life.
전생을 아는 유일한 방법은 현생을 진실로 아는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 세속적 진리에서 보면 현생은 전생의 변형이기 때문입니다.
Q : How can I truly know about the present life?
어떻게 현생을 진실로 알 수 있을까요?
A : According to Buddhist teaching, it is that the one who knows and the known present life become one ; that is, subject and object become one.
불법에 의하면 아는 당신과 알려지는 현생이 하나가 되는 것입니다. 즉, 주체와 객체가 하나가 되는 것입니다.
Q : It is hard to understand.
이해하기가 어렵군요.
A : It means you try not to know about the present life as an object but just try to be the present life itself.
그 말은 현생을 대상으로 삼고 알려고 하지 말라는 뜻입니다. 그냥 현생 그 자체가 되라는 뜻입니다.
Q : What does “being the present life itself” mean?
현생 자체가 된다는 것이 무슨 뜻인가요?
A : It means being and staying at the present moment by moment, that is, here and now.
그건 현재의 순간순간이 되어 머무르라는 뜻이며, 지금 여기에 머무르라는 뜻입니다.
